A kezdet és a cogito

Absztrakt

Husserl a folytonos újrakezdés filozófusa. A jelen archeológusa, aki cikk-cakkban halad, egyik fenoméntől a másikig. A fenomenológia belső válságai magának a gondolkodásnak a megtörténésére, kezdetére mutatnak rá. A válság inherens eleme minden filozófiának, minden kezdetnek, minden gondolkodásnak. Válság nélkül nincs gondolkodás – hiszen a gondolkodás a dolgok kellős közepében magukról a dolgokról való gondolkodás. Végső soron a husserli fenomenológia is ebbe a problémába ütközött.

Husserl is the philosopher of constant recommencement. The archeologist of the present, proceeding in zigzags, from one phenomenon to another. From one question to the other—without ever getting to the end. We never reach either the origins, or the final telos. Phenomenology did not, in the end, turn into an order—which is no mere coincidence, given the nature of phenomenology that resists the constitution of systems. Husserl zigzagged through the classic problems of philosophy, at times finding authentic solutions to them, other times recycling old ones. Or maybe the two are inseparable, after all. Husserl inherits tradition, but also renews it: he renews it by asking new questions, and by putting old problems in new perspective. In other words, phenomenology itself is cut through internal fissures: the concept of phenomenology as a strict science is continuously undermined by phenomena themselves. The appearance of the theme of crisis in the philosophy of Husserl is not merely a late development; rather, it is the permanent internal glowing, the aporetic bubble, the energizing power and torturing tension of phenomenology itself. From now on the problem of crisis will continue to structure the Husserlian phenomenology; attempts to resolve it mark the milestones of phenomenology, as well as its methodological and thematic transformations. Crisis--both as distress and as criticism—is the most internal organizing principle of Husserl`s phenomenology. As is its nature, it tries to surpass itself, to swing on as life and to show its own affirmation, only to thus reduplicate itself. The inner crises of phenomenology point at the event, at the beginning of thinking itself. In the fissures generated by the epoche, reason or ego is confronted with their own “other,” their own alienage. Getting back to things we find ourselves in an intermediary dimension where the conventional instruments of orientation may be invalid. The chances of crisis are constant in liminality; no regulative idea may eliminate this. Getting back to things, we are asked to choose among them, as well as to be critical, often self-critical, too. Because we are originally liminal beings, a new experience poses a challenge to identity, which can even surface as a crisis. The possibility of crisis may not be eliminated by any rigorous science. Humans are ens medium, or intermediary beings in the field of decisions and commitments, who don’t always know which words fit which things. Who don’t always find the communality of name and place. Place and time are always intermediary: a topos that either yields to the seduction of utopias, or is torn by atopias and heterotopias. Behind order, there always appears the “over” of order, the awry, the insane—the way the wandering gypsy caravans spin through and through Europe. The scandal of reason, of logos is insane talk, on which it relies for its own existence. Crisis is an inherent element of every philosophy, of every beginning, of all thinking. There is no thinking without crisis—because thinking in the center of things is thinking about things themselves. Crisis for thinking means that place and time are no longer proximate, and that frames that guaranteed the stability of the birth of reason have exploded. Frames where reason is our possession, and where our identity poses us no uncomfortable questions. Where there are no ghosts. Where we can consistently give ourselves, like functionaries, to the dream of the strict science, and to Europe, the thought of a notion. Following Descartes, Husserl found in the cogito the underlying gesture of all thinking. The absolute beginning that is the source of all being, time and knowledge. He referred to a universal mathesis, an absolute method that orients us in matters of knowledge and praxis. What is namely at stake is the life or death of philosophy. According to Heidegger, it is exactly this gesture, the philosophy based on cogito, on the present and on consciousness (“the moral of the method”), is what is scandalous: a road leading nowhere. Because “we are sign”, we need interpretation; our thinking is nothing but attempts to interpret the signs. In order to fathom who we are—after all, Husserl attempted the same. According to Heidegger, however, the traces of the past by nature interfere with self-understanding, and what thinking does is trying to interpret these traces. In the end, Husserlian phenomenology encountered the same problem. Thinking is constant repetition, recommencement, because there are no final, recordable answers. We are such that we are also our own ghosts, our own excess, our own insanity. Thinking, if done consistently, always wanders off to territories where it is unable to justify its premises. Where it needs a “metaphysical handrail”; postulating things that defy demonstration. During thinking we arrive at crossroads and diverging paths: one leads to metaphysics, the other to things. The two, however, are closely interwoven, and none can be avoided. We are intermediary beings, after all.
