Herausbildung und Zerfall der männlichen Identität der Protagonisten in Joseph Roths Roman „Radetzkymarsch”

Absztrakt

Azt a feladatot tűztem ki magam elé, hogy feltárjam Joseph Roth Radetzky induló című műve alapján a főszereplők férfi identitásának szociokulturális konstruáltságát. A bevezetésben felvetett kérdéseket a következőképpen tudom megválaszolni a szövegelemzés alapján: Roth regénye a férfikutatás számára fontos irodalmi dokumentum, és ebből a szempontból igen informatívnak tartom, mert a tiszti és hivatalnoki réteghez tartozó férfiak sorsa alapján részletesen bemutatja azt a folyamtot, hogy hogyan válnak a domináns férfiasság képviselőivé. Kiderül, hogy a férfi főszereplők a gender identitásuk csapdájába esnek, ahol előbb vagy utóbb kellemetlenül érzik magukat. Bizonyos jellemvonásokat kell magukra ölteniük azért, hogy abban a társadalmi rétegben, ahová tartoznak, elfogadják őket. Ők maguk is megvetik azokat a férfiakat, akik az alacsonyabb társadalmi réteghez tartoznak és „alacsonyabb rendű”, azaz marginális férfiassággal rendelkeznek. Ugyanakkor őket is lebecsüli a környezetük, ha nem a kor férfi ideáljának megfelelően illően viselkednek. A Foucault-féle diskurzuselmélet alapján általam kifejlesztett diskurzusanalízis segítségével bebizonyosodott a szövegelemzés során a férfi identitás szociokulturális meghatározottsága. A regény szereplői olyan társadalmi térben élnek, amelyet egyrészt a császármítosz, másrészt a férfiassággal szemben támasztott elvárások itatják át. Ezek a jelenségek megsokszorozódnak a monarchia szélén levő területen, Galíciában, ahová a legifjabb Trotta helyezteti át magát. A lelketlen, a Trotta számára megszokottól eltérő szociális tér hozzájárul a férfiidentitása széthullásához. A Michel Foucault diskurzuselmélete alapján kialakított diskurzusanalízist beágyaztam a férfiak uralta kulturális kontextusba. A főszereplők a Habsburg monarchia Ferenc József periódusa alatt élő katonatisztek illetve magas rangú hivatalnokok. A szöveg interdiszciplináris olvasása során a téma feltárult. Habár a féri identitás szociális konstruáltságát Foucault hatalom elmélete segítségével vizsgáltam, más releváns elméleteket is alkalmaztam, mint a férfikutatás. Vizsgáltam a szociális tér és a férfi identitás interakcióját a fenomenológiai és poszt-marxista térelméletek ütköztetésével, a mítosz hatását elsősorban Roland Barthes mítoszelméletének segítségével. Mindezeket a tudományos gondolatokat Foucault hatalom elméletének keretei közt szemléltem, azaz oly módon, hogy a tér, a mítosz, továbbá a halál, a történelmi események és a férfiakkal szembeni elvárások mely diskurzusai révén formálja a hatalom a férfi identitást. A téma ilyen megközelítése egyrészt elősegítette a kutatás sokoldalú kibontását, másrészt a téma különböző szempontokból történő megragadását. A szövegelemzés alapján levont következtetéseket néhány kortárs író, mint Arthur Schnitzler, Franz Werfel, Robert Musil, Hermann Broch, Stefan Zweig, műveivel való összehasonlítással támasztottam alá. A disszertációban vizsgált számos diskurzus vizsgálata leleplezi a hatalom célját, ami olyan férfi alattvalók nevelése, akik a császárba és a monarchiába vetett vak hitük révén a monarchia pusztulását megakadályozzák. Roth műve fontos irodalmi dokumentum a férfikutatás számára. This thesis discusses the social-cultural constructedness of male identity in Joseph Roth’s novel Radetzky March. I can give the following answers to the questions I have put in the introduction: Roth’s novel is an important literary document for Men’s Studies and I consider it highly informative; as it gives a precise description of the procedure of turning men into the representatives of dominant masculinity by delineating the fate of male protagonists in the layer of officers and civil servants of high position, i.e. a chief officer of the district administration. It has turned out that the male protagonists get caught in the trap of their gender identity where sooner or later they will feel uneasy. They have to acquire certain characteristics so as to be accepted by the social layer to which they belong. They themselves despise the men in lower social layers because they consider their marginal masculinity to be inferior. At the same time the comrades and colleagues of officers and civil servants, respectively, will have a low opinion of them if they do not behave up to expectations i.e. according to the male ideal of their social layer. By means of the discourse analysis which I developed on the basis of Michel Foucault’s discourse theory I succeeded in proving the social constructedness of male identity in the course of text analysis where discourses were revealed which promoted the development and the disintegration of male identity, respectively. The following discourses act identity forming: the male ideal of the age, the social position of the protagonists, the Kaisermyth and the myth of the hero of Solferino, the social space, and later, institutions like family, boarding school, military. Relying on Michel Foucault’s power theory it was verified how male identity was constructed discursively and non-discursively in the family, in the boarding school and in the military on the one hand, and by the social environment on the other hand. The enumerated discourses form the dispositif of masculinity which consists of both discursive and non-discursive elements. Consequently, not only the above mentioned institutions had to be considered in the course of the research, but also further factors like the role of the social space, the phenomenon death and the paintings, which influenced the identity of the individual as it was shown in the thesis. The protagonists live in a social space which is imbued with the Kaisermyth on the one hand and with the horizon of expectations on the other. They were brought up in families where the father was either an officer or a chief officer of the district administration. As a result, the family atmosphere was military, just like in the cadet school and in the military. Besides these, the Trottas inherited the task from the grandfather, i.e. to save the life of the emperor (Kaiser). The male identity was formed and converted as a result of intentional and unintentional influences. The following discourses proved to be identity disintegrating: changing of society and of military, withdrawal of women from the environment of male adolescents, death cases, and the social space, the lifestyle of the civilians, the Kaisermyth and the myth of the hero of Solferino. The change of the social atmosphere, the occurrence of new phenomena like nationalism, elicit a value-vacuum so in the society as in the military. The old values are no longer valid and the new ones are not yet accepted. These phenomena multiply on the borderland of the monarchy, in Galicia where the youngest Trotta is transferred. The soulless social space contributes to the disintegration of the old male identity. In the case of the father but especially in that of the son the depicted circumstances lead to discomfort, they are not comfortable in their skin and even death cases in the family worsened this feeling. Interestingly, the discourses of both myths are this time negative. They force tasks on the protagonists which they cannot solve. The resultant of the force lines elicits the disintegration of the male identity and it leads finally to the death of the protagonists. The discourse analysis which was developed on the basis of Michel Foucault’s discourse theory was embedded in the male-dominated cultural context. The main figures are representatives of officers and civil servants in the francisco-josephinian period. The interdisciplinary reading of the text unfolded the theme. Although the constructedness of male identity was examined by means of Foucault’s power theory, it was also examined with other relevant theories such as Men’s Studies. The interaction of social space and male identity was examined by counter posing phenomenological and post-Marxist space theories. I also discussed the effect of myth on the male identity by means of Roland Barthes myth theory. All these scientific thoughts were viewed in the scope of Foucault’s power theory, i.e. through what discourses of space, myth, death, historical events, and expectations towards men does power shape male identity? This approach to the theme promoted the manifold development of the research on the one hand, and to capture the theme from different points of view, on the other hand. The conclusions drawn on the basis of the text analysis were supported by literary texts by contemporary writers like Arthur Schnitzler, Franz Werfel, Robert Musil, Hermann Broch, and Stefan Zweig. Summarizing it can be postulated, that Joseph Roth’s Radetzky March reveals how the constructedness of male identity influences the personal fate of officers and civil servants of high position in the Austrian-Hungarian Monarchy at the turn of the century. His interpretation of culture is based on his knowledge and on his personal experience of the period. The development, the change and the disintegration of male identity become manifest in the interactions between the individual and the community. These relationships are embodied in behaviours which range from total accommodation through distancing to total alienation. Men will be subjectivized through the internalization of social-cultural values which are inspired by norms and expectations, and by socio-cultural environment which is pervaded by the lines of power. The behavior of the protagonists reflects the core of the culture and reacts to the horizon of cultural expectations. Roth’s protagonists - just like him - move in or out of the paradigms. At a certain point the values become ambiguous as a result of the change of several factors, and the developing value-vacuum reveals subdued or even the creation of new tendencies. Thus, it comes to the feeling of uncertainty which results in melancholy. The negative change in the state of mind elicits the slow crumbling of the internalized male identity and gives place for the development of a new one. The research method used in this thesis stood the test as it made a detailed discovery of discourses possible which canalized the power relationships in the Austrian-Hungarian Monarchy. Discourse and power cannot be discussed independently of each other as power – so Foucault – structures discourses. The analysis of the discourses reveals the aims of the power, i.e. to produce male subjects who can hinder the downfall of the monarchy through their blind belief in the emperor. Among the male characters in the novel there are not only officers and civil servants but also others like e.g. peasants, merchants, railway employees, servants which present different forms of marginal masculinity. The analysis of male identity in those lower social layers could be the continuation of the research.
