The aim of my thesis is to elucidate foreign policy decisions that led to the coup and the motives that are concealed behind them. I investigate the main steps and, events to decide whether they agree with the idea of containment policy and the value system that the U.S. represents, mainly the protection of democracy all over the world. The basic stricture against Communism was that it threatens democracy and the U.S. should protect it as the counter power of the Soviet Union. I will show whether the Guatemalan events fulfill the idea that the U.S. conveyed to the world during the Cold War.
