In my dissertation I aim to explore the role of reproductive traits in plant life cycle and in the maintenance of biodiversity. In the first case study I analysed the fruit- and seed production of orchids with different pollination types (nectar-rewarding, deceptive and autogamous). I demonstrated that – in contrast with the general assumption – deceptive species do not have lower reproductive success than nectar-rewarding species, as they can effectively compensate for their lower fruit set by having a higher number of seeds per fruit. This can at least partly explain why deceptive species are so widespread in the orchid family. In the second case study I aimed to explore the seed dispersal in space and time of the endangered species Astragalus contortuplicatus L. In case of dispersal in space I showed that the seeds of this species can be effectively dispersed by waterfowl. This fact can explain its sporadic occurrences in different hydrological catchments, and also suggests that the rarity of this species is more likely to be caused by its specific habitat requirements than its inability of endozoochorous dispersal by birds. In case of dispersal in time I demonstrated that the seeds of A. contortuplicatus can retain their viability for a prolonged time period: seeds are able to germinate even after 131 years of storage in herbarium. In the third case study I aimed to analyse the effects of Nostoc (Cyanobacteria) colonies on the germination and establishment of selected plants of alkali grasslands. As in our experiments the Nostoc extract had a species-specific effect on the germination and establishment of plants, it can be concluded that the presence of Nostoc colonies can affect the structure, composition and diversity of alkali grasslands.
