A. fumigatus is the most important airborne human fungal pathogen, which can cause severe invasive pulmonary aspergillosis in immunocompromised patients. Understanding of oxidative and nitrosative stress responses in pathogenic fungus is substantial and can contribute to explain pathogenicity. While AtfA transcription factor has already been described to be involved in oxidative stress response in Aspergilli, not much is known with regards to nitrosative stress response. The aim of this study was to determine the putative role of AtfA transcription factor in nitrosative stress response in A. fumigatus. High sensitivity of the ΔatfA mutant strain was discovered in growth assay experiments which suggest a significant role in regulation of resistance to nitrosative stress in A. fumigatus. AtfA transcription factor may take part in regulation throws new light upon NO detoxification in Aspergillus spp.
