In today’s world, sports have significantly become a very important part of everyday life, and with the way sports has integrated with modern technology, one could somewhat say Computer Science is sport. With the way technology is continuously changing, one could wonder how much the sporting world would change fifty years from now as the integration of computer science is rapidly increasing. Before the introduction of computers in sport, human calculations and the human-eye were the key tools used in sports. Nowadays, sports have become very dependent on modern technology. Computer science in sport has become a well-established field. The influence of technology in sport have been said to be both positive and negative. The quality of the games, performance and training of athletes, flow of the games and facilities used during the partaking of these activities have all greatly improved as technology has progressed. Computer Science has become a necessary part of some sports (such as motorsport), it is used in others to improve performance. The increase in technology has allowed many decisions in sports matches to be taken, or reviewed, off-field, with another official using instant replays to make decisions. In some sports, players can now challenge decisions made by officials. In Association football, goal-line technology makes decisions on whether a ball has crossed the goal line or not. This thesis reports and looks at these technologies in depth with aim of concluding that Sports officiating could be solely dependent on Computer science thus leading to think that computer science is sport, Emphasis is placed on video assistant referee because it is currently the most talked about technology in sport. Through extensive research, reading multiple papers and my own interest of Sport and Technology. I was compelled to dive into this topic. Being a basketball player myself I have an advanced understanding on why technologies like these are useful. Although there are many technologies that could be looked at and provide the conclusion that Computer Science is Sport. This thesis will be mainly focusing on two sports (brief examples of other sports will be included) and three types of technology (Video Assistant Referee, Goal Line Technology and Shot Clock). It will focus in depth on how the mentioned technologies and the dependency of this technology have formed what one could call the modern game.
