As a game mechanic, it provides the player with the necessary means to survive and further develop themselves, showcasing the symbolic meaning of fire in the myth of Prometheus through gameplay elements. Through fire, civilization was created, and human existence was established in the game. The presence of fire is crucial for the preservation of order and civilization. Losing fire causes characters to regress to a pre-Promethean state of primitivity and mindlessness, which can also be experienced by the player character through the gameplay mechanic of Hollowing. While Dark Souls takes inspiration from the Prometheus myth, it also reinterprets major elements such as the dual nature (preserving and destructive) of fire. My thesis argues that Dark Souls is the retelling of and sequel to the Prometheus myth, where the player is faced with the perils of a pre-Promethean world.21enPrometheus mythRetelling and continuation of Prometheus mythSymbolic meaning of fireThe Retelling of the Prometheus Myth in Dark Souls (2011)diplomamunkaCulture SciencesHozzáférhető a 2022 decemberi felsőoktatási törvénymódosítás értelmében.
