Published data show that the microbiome affects colonic function and vice versa. However, the effects of the microbiome on small intestinal contractile activity are not well known. The small intestine does not have a large bacterial load like the colon. Thus, the bacteria themselves are not likely to have a direct effect on small intestinal function.
