Tétel Korlátozottan hozzáférhető Absent Mothers and Fathers in Kate Atkinson’s Behind the Scenes at the Museum and Human Croquet(2014-04-30T12:45:09Z) Tóth, Adrienn; Ureczky, Eszter; DE--TEK--Bölcsészettudományi KarKate Atkinson is a contemporary writer and she became one of the best-selling British authors. This thesis is about two of her novels, Behind the Scenes at the Museum, and Human Croquet. The main theme is how mothers and fathers are absent in both of the novels and how they are inaccessible for the protagonists. It deals with how the main characters cope with life without the help of the parents.Tétel Korlátozottan hozzáférhető Alias Mary Whitney: female sexuality and dual consciousness in Margaret Atwood's Alias GraceSzirák, Anna Mária; Ureczky, Eszter; DE--Bölcsészettudományi KarMy thesis aims to explore dual consciousness and its connection to female sexuality in Margaret Atwood's novel Alias Grace (1996). By examining the protagonist Grace Marks' relationships with other female characters and with her doctor Simon Jordan, I argue that the psychic split in the novel is not a legal or a medical case study of murder or schizophrenia, but a socio-cultural reflection of the gender constructions and dynamics of the setting. It is my understanding that this duality is a result of a cultural and social othering, in which both Grace Marks and Dr. Jordan play a crucial part.Tétel Korlátozottan hozzáférhető Amy Winehouse as a Self-Destructive Idol(2014-04-30T12:46:58Z) Kovács, Edit; Ureczky, Eszter; DE--Bölcsészettudományi KarIn this thesis my intention is to demonstrate a legendary figure’s metamorphosis from civil identity to an international star, as well as to represent the traumas she had to face with all through her life.Tétel Korlátozottan hozzáférhető Analysing the Double in R. L. Stevenson’s Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, O. Wilde’s The Picture of Dorian Gray, Contemporary South Korean Pop Music of BTS, D. Aronofsky’s Black Swan and in Bong Joon-Ho’s ParasiteGyöngyösiné Fejér, Ágnes; Ureczky, Eszter; DE--Bölcsészettudományi KarIn my thesis, I analyse the concept of the double. My objects of exploration are R. L. Stevenson's Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, Oscar Wilde's The Picture of Dorian Gray, BTS' 2019 album The Map of the Soul: Persona, and two films: Darren Aronofsky's Black Swan and Bong Joon-Ho's Parasite. My thesis introduces psychoanalytical, neuro-scientific and literary explanations to the reader. I show how the repressed self can be dangerous if it comes back to the surface. I have chosen culturally and timely different works of art in order to give a broader picture, moving from the personal level to the level of society.Tétel Korlátozottan hozzáférhető “And Then You're Gone:” The Portayal Of Narcissism And Dysfunctional Family Relationships In Tracy Letts' August: Osage CountyPásti, Hajnalka Tímea; Ureczky, Eszter; DE--Bölcsészettudományi KarIn my essay I would like to explore the underlying implications of the behavioural patterns of the characters while bearing in mind Sigmund Freud’s theories on narcissism, and the observations and interpretations of other authors, researchers and psychoanalysts working with his basic principles. I wish to examine each member of the family; the mother Violet, the father Beverly, and finally the three daughters Barbara, Ivy and Karen, with regards to the following statements: Violet Weston as an abusive, narcissistic mother and her lack of adequate parenting skills places a huge burden on her daughters who on top of having to cope with and care for two addicts suffer from the consequences of their flawed upbringing. Barbara, Ivy and Karen Weston do not receive acceptance and support from their mother, and they do not have the opportunity to turn to the father in search of an alternate either because Beverly Weston is a passive and distant figure, possibly as self-absorbed as the mother. The negative influence of the parents define the daughters’ behaviour and serve as explanation for quite a number of issues they have to face in adulthood, such as the glaring problems surrounding their romantic lives and their reckless search for protection.Tétel Korlátozottan hozzáférhető Billy Elliot and A Kestrel for a Knave as Bildungsromans and Social Critique(2013-05-02T08:52:39Z) Törzsök, Viktória; Ureczky, Eszter; DE--TEK--Bölcsészettudományi KarDolgozatom két könyvet (Melvin Burgess - Billy Elliot és Barry Hines - A Kestrel for a Knave) hasonlít össze és azt vizsgálja, hogy a munkásosztály helyzete hogyan jelenik meg a két műben illetve hogyan és miért olvashatjuk a két művet mind fejlődésregényként, mind pedig huszadik századi társadalomkritikaként.Tétel Korlátozottan hozzáférhető Changing Gender Roles During the Great War in Pat Barker’s Regeneration and Rebecca West’s The Return of the SoldierPapp, Dóra; Ureczky, Eszter; DE--Bölcsészettudományi KarThe analysis of the changing nature of gender roles and duties after the Great War represented in Pat Barker's and Rebecca West's novelsTétel Korlátozottan hozzáférhető Crises of Memory and Masculinity: Shell-shock in Pat Barker's Regeneration(2013-05-02T08:52:23Z) Pál, Anita; Ureczky, Eszter; DE--TEK--Bölcsészettudományi KarBarker depicts how the classic trouble of society, expectations, stigmatization, and idealizations related to the war ethos and the patriotic heroism of soldiers as men provoke serious crises in masculine identity formation during the First World War, expending the reader’s comprehension of possible treating methods of curing traumas, identity and gender crisis, and also rewriting the cultural memory of the Great War.Tétel Szabadon hozzáférhető Cultures of Pollution: Epidemic Disease and the Biopolitics of Contagion in Contemporary Anglophone FictionUreczky, Eszter; Bényei, Tamás; Irodalomtudományok doktori iskola; DE--Bölcsészettudományi Kar -- Angol-Amerikai IntézetAbsztrakt A disszertációegy speciális beteg test, a ragályos test/tetem metaforikus potenciálját feltárva kortárs anglofón, főleg angol történelmi regényeket elemez, amelyek különböző korokban játszódnak: a középkorban(Wiliam OwenRoberts:Ragály, 1991, magyar kiadás: 2004), a kora újkorban(GeraldineBrooks:Csodák éve, 2002, magyar kiadás: 2008), a viktoriánus korban(MatthewKneale:Sweet Thames [Édes Temze], 1992 és Anne Roiphe:An ImperfectLens [A tökéletlen lencse], 2006), valamint a késő 20. században (Alan Hollinghurst:A szépség vonala, 2004, magyar kiadás: 2011 és AlfredCorn:Part of His Story [A történet része], 1997). A dolgozat a nyugati kultúra három ikonikus járványos betegségének irodalmi ábrázolásait vizsgálja: a pestist, a kolerát és az AIDS-et. A háromtematikusfejezetkét-kétregénytértelmez, s legtöbbjük a brit kulturálisörökségbengyökerezik. Az AIDS-testet ma elsősorban a bizonytalan határokkal rendelkező immunológiai testtel azonosítjuk, mely illeszkedik a szintén bizonytalan, egyre inkább medikalizált emberi szubjektum reprezentációs történetének ívéhez. Továbbá a trauma feldolgozására is nagy hangsúlyt fektetek. Ezt a művészet segítségével éri el és a mű végére újra beszél. A regényben előforduló fontos motívumokról (például fa) is szó van a dolgozatban.Tétel Korlátozottan hozzáférhető Designer Babies and Saviour Siblings: Bioethical Dilemmas in Jodi Picoult’s My Sister’s KeeperBerényi, Barbara; Ureczky, Eszter; DE--Bölcsészettudományi KarMy thesis is based on Jodi Picoult's My Sister's Keeper in which we meet the Fitzgerald family, originally a family of four. At age 2 Kate - the daughter- is diagnosed with Acute Promyelocytic Leukaemia (APL). The family is trying to find solutions to Kate's sickness and the only thing they can turn to is saviour siblings. After IVF and PGD, Anna Fitzgerald is created. A saviour baby designed to be the perfect match for whatever her big sister needs. At the age of thirteen Anna realizes that her life is completely connected to her sister. Although she wants to help her sister heal, she also wants to live. With these thoughts, she sues her own parents for medical emancipation. My thesis analyses the story of the Fitzgerald from ethical, medical, legal and psychological perspectives.Tétel Korlátozottan hozzáférhető Dwelling in Doubleness(2013-05-29T14:57:59Z) Ureczky, Eszter; Bényei, Tamás; DE--TEK--Bölcsészettudományi KarBruce Chatwin’s On the Black Hill and Michel Tournier’s Gemini suggest that one can not simply have a twin brother, since to be a twin brother is an archetypal, existential situation. It is by far not a “a wondeful balance between the other and oneself” (Tournier 144), but the two novels also prove that perfect twinship, perfect identity – like perfect marriage – would have no story worth telling at all. Thus, the principle of attractio similium does not stand with twin stories, where identical twins embody opposing worlding-forces. Either Heavenly Twins or Border Barons, they appear as perennial dwellers of existential boundaries, who balance on the brink of the nothingness of inert sameness and the pain of unamendable separation from oneness. They are hybrid Christ and Narcissus figures in the sense, who suffer something instead of others, non-twins. And this is how they provide a fertile paradigm for expressing the essential doubleness of human existence. I endeavoured to find raptures for stereotypes based on nationality and sexes. I drew the conclusion that the English have many common features with the Americans. Based on the royal family of the thirties, the English seem to consume a lot , prefer popular culture and use slang, exaggerated language, though, these features are generally attached to the Americans. I also realized that the ideal of the gentleman cannot be fully applied to the royal brothers, either. As for gender issues I also concluded that the men behaved differently from the pattern that their sex would demand and women shifted to virilization both in conduct and gender roles.Tétel Korlátozottan hozzáférhető Familial Emotions and Relations in Ari Aster’s HereditaryPovedák, Stefánia; Ureczky, Eszter; DE--Bölcsészettudományi KarMy thesis explores the familial emotions and relations in the Graham family in the film Hereditary directed by Ari Aster. I argue that most of the emotions and relations in the family are corrupted or broken, due to the many traumas, either transgenerational, collective, or individual, which the family, especially the mother figure, experienced over the years. The focus of my thesis rests on motherhood, its ambivalence, and its corruption by an oppressive patriarchal society, where motherhood does not exist as a natural experience of women, but as a patriarchal institution, which is illustrated in the film through the demonic cult of Paimon where the members of the family become playthings of both Paimon and society.Tétel Korlátozottan hozzáférhető Fatherhood in the Films of Dead Poets Society and Billy ElliotZhang, Xueou Lívia; Ureczky, Eszter; DE--Bölcsészettudományi KarIn my thesis, I examine how people believe that there are certain qualities and activities that are considered to be part of the ‘good’ parenting practices and how these are more idealogically driven than based on empirical evidence by comparing the fathers', Thomas Perry and Jackie Elliot, parenting styles in Dead Poets Society and Billy Elliot. Financial circumstances of the parent cannot serve as an indicator for being successful at childrearing or not. We cannot say that well-educated parents are definitely going to do better, either. Furthermore, whether a child has both or only one parent will not determine the future of the child. Instead, a more reliable sign for good parenting is the quality of the communication between parent and child. That is the major difference between the two fathers' parenting styles that decided their sons' lives and the son, who was in a considerably better situation did not reach his goal while the other made his dream come true.Tétel Korlátozottan hozzáférhető Finding the Self in the In-betweenHegedűs, Tünde; Ureczky, Eszter; DE--Bölcsészettudományi KarMy primary source is Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland (2010).In my thesis, I analyze the role of cinematic storytelling in the process of Alice becoming a female hero as well as the in-between states and places she finds herself and establishes her personality. The first chapter is centred on the first few scenes of Alice in Wonderland, which are meant to set the context for Alice to become a hero through describing the social and personal factors related to her. The second chapter explains the in-between states Alice finds herself and develops herself as a character. The final chapter is mostly concerned with the question of femininity since Alice as a female character taking traditionally masculine gender roles can be considered problematic.Tétel Korlátozottan hozzáférhető Food Insecurity, Organic Food, Animal Holocaust and Human-Animal Relations in OkjaZsadányi, Szelina; Ureczky, Eszter; DE--Bölcsészettudományi KarMy thesis aims to raise the issues of contemporary food politics. For my analysis, I use a film, Okja directed by Bong Joon-ho. This paper reflects on several issues such as food insecurity and problems with organic food. Furthermore, the exploitation of the animals and the changing relationships between humans and animals emerge as well. I study food politics through the film, whereas the corrupt practices of a corporation destroy the life of an innocent girl and her loved pet. What is more, the drawbacks of the industrialized livestock industry are demonstrated through the slaughterhouses. The aim of my thesis is not to oppose meat, rather to call attention to that the appearance of capitalism and mass production have had a negative impact on society.Tétel Korlátozottan hozzáférhető Gender Relations, Desire and Illness in Charlotte Bronte's Shirley(2013-01-16T11:18:17Z) Gazsó, Szidónia; Ureczky, Eszter; DE--TEK--Bölcsészettudományi KarCharlotte Brontë's Shirley leads us back to the early nineteenth century, into the period of the Napoleonic wars and the Luddite riots. The novel represents not just the economical, social, political situation at the time but also draws a parallel between working class people and English middle class women. As a result of the wars, trade becomes totally impossible, workers simply cannot earn their living, they are locked up in these restricted social and economical positions like all the women in the rigid Victorian era. Thus, working class men become feminized, they experience the social claustrophobia that originates from the historical events. The text tries to find answers to questions like how a man and a woman can understand each other or how they can survive emotionally without a partner. Illness as such also gets a crucial role. I would like to focus on the relationships of the major characters, their Bildung and on psychosomatic illness that appears in the novel as a projection of repressed desires and as a means of development in personalityTétel Korlátozottan hozzáférhető Gender Roles and Gothic Spaces in Daphne du Maurier’s Rebecca and Charlotte Brontë’s Jane Eyre(2013-05-02T08:52:56Z) Kaszás, Judit; Ureczky, Eszter; DE--TEK--Bölcsészettudományi KarI examine how Jane Eyre as an intertext is evoked in Rebecca from the perspectives of gender roles, the doubleness of the female characters and the Gothic mansions with their dark secrets, mysterious spaces and threatening atmosphere.
