Dél-Alföldi Árpád- és későközépkori egyházak építőanyagainak összehasonlító archeometriai vizsgálata

Absztrakt

Vizsgálataim eredményeit összehasonlítottam a megyék egyes régészeti lelőhelyeire (Csomorkány, Szermonostor, Ellésmonostor, Szeged-Alsóvárosi templom) vonatkozó eredményekkel.
A téglák termolumineszcens vizsgálatai segítségével pontosítottam Murony (10. század), Bánkút (13. század), Sarkadkeresztúr (11. század), Szegvár-Sáp (12-13. század), templom építésével kapcsolatos régészeti megállapításokat. A habarcsok további vizsgálataival megállapítottam a CaCO3-tartalom mennyiségének korszakokhoz köthető változásait, továbbá a hidraulikus tényező az egyes lelőhelyek esetében pontosabb építési kormeghatározást tett lehetővé.
A dolgozat tartalmaz egy mintakatalógust, amelyben rövid régészeti leírást adok az egyes lelőhelyekről és petrográfiai leírást közlök valamennyi építőanyagról, ezáltal referencia anyagként szolgál a többi Dél-alföldi építőanyag ilyen célú vizsgálataihoz, besorolásához.

Summary

My Doctoral Thesis is discussing the comparative archaeometric analysis of the excavated building material (stone, brick and mortar) of 24 rural churches (10-16th centuries), 2 ancestral monasteries and 3 settlements from the Arpad Age. Most of the recovered artifacts can be associated with the Arpad Age from the present area of Békés and Csongrád Counties and some of them were re-used in consecutive periods. From 29 excavation sites altogether 169 stone samples, 78 brick samples and 82 mortar samples were analysed. I compared the results of my study with previous archaeological data from Csomorkány, Szermonostor, Ellésmonostor, Szeged-Alsóvárosi church.
The aim of the comparative analysis was to identify the building materials used at each excavation sites, to identify their source quarries and to define historical distribution of use. In the case of brick samples my aim was to define composition and firing temperatures, while in mortar samples to compare mortar compositions found in different areas, buildings and building periods.

Based on the applied petrographic methods I distinguished seven main stone groups (andesite, gritstone, freshwater dolomite limestone, travertine, red limestone, biogenic limestone, oolite limestone). I classified a further group for small-sized and small-quantity samples without any characteristic texture through which a precise dating and the identification of formation and source could be possible. Based on the available data I presume that the stone samples examined can be associated with source quarries situated along River Maros and the source area of River Körös. In some cases I found direct evidences of source quarries. For example, red limestone originated from the Tölgyhát quarry, Gerecse, Hungary, and dolomite limestone is from the interfluves between the River Danube and River Tisza and occurred only in the excavations in Csongrád County. Complementing archaeological and historical data with the results of geochemical and geophysical analyses I established that the brick samples were manufactured using locally cut raw material containing clay, loess and sand with Einkorn Wheat (Triticum monococcum L.) chaff and ceramic scrap additives. Additives reduced the overall mass of the brick and increased its heat insulating character. Based on the phase composition results of X-ray diffraction analyses I established that the bricks were fired in local kilns at 650-850 Co firing temperature. Firing temperature depended on the precise location of the bricks in the kiln. I did not find significant differences between the mineral composition of the bricks from Békés and Csongrád Counties. With the help of thermoluminescent analyses I defined the building period of the churches of Murony (10th century), Bánkút (13 th century), Sarkadkeresztúr (11 th century) and Szegvár-Sáp (12-13 th centuries) more precisely. Through the X-ray diffraction analyses of samples I found differences between the proportions of sand and carbonate contents of mortar samples used in walls and in the foundation of rural churches and ancestral monasteries. As the result of further analysis I identified time-period-dependant changes of the quantity of CaCO3 content. In addition, with the help of the hydraulic factor suitable for relative age determination I could date the building period of some excavation sites more precisely.
As an important part of my dissertation I prepared a sample catalogue containing short archaeological and petrographic descriptions regarding each excavation sites and building material samples. The catalogue can serve as a reference material for similar future studies and identification on the building material of the southern Great Hungarian Plain.
