Fracture and fragmentation of disordered materials

Absztrakt

This work summarizes my PhD research regarding the fracture and fragmentation of heterogeneous materials. For my work I used molecular dynamics simulations of discrete element models in two and three dimensions. I investigated the crackling noise caused by a propagating single crack in a three-point bending geometry. A thorough analysis was carried out regarding the damage accumulation inside the sample prior to crack propagation. The jerky propagation of the crack was reproduced and analyzed with special attention to crack bursts/avalanches. The fracture process zone developing in front of the crack tip was also extensively studied. I analyzed the fragmentation of brittle spherical bodies impacting on a hard plate. I confirmed the universality of the exponent of the fragment mass distributions. I carried out a thorough analysis of the fragmentation phase transition using the method of finite size scaling. I was able to determine the critical exponents of the transition with a relatively good precision. The effect of plasticity on impact fragmentation was also studied. Experimental results of plastic fragmentation were analyzed and an anomalously low exponent of the fragment mass distribution was found, indicating a novel universality class. The results were verified numerically by modifying the previously used discrete element model to simulate the impact of plastic materials.

Ez a munka összefoglalja a doktorim keretei közt végzett, a heterogén anyagok törésére és fragmentációjára vonatkozó kutatásaimat. Munkámhoz két- és háromdimenziós diszkrét elem modelleken végeztem molekuláris dinamikai szimulációkat. Egy három-pontos hajlítás elrendezésben megjelenő repedés terjedése közben keletkező repedési zajt vizsgáltam. Részletesen elemeztem a repedés megjelenése előtt a mintában felhalmozódó károsodást. A repedés zajos terjedését sikerült reprodukálni a szimulációkban és különös figyelmet fordítottam a repedési lavinák vizsgálatára. A repedés hegye előtt kialakuló process zónát is részletesen tanulmányoztam. Merev falnak ütköző rideg, gömbszerű testek fragmentációját vizsgálva sikerült megerősítenem a fragmenstömeg eloszlások exponensének univerzális voltát. A véges méret skálázás módszerével részletesen jellemeztem a fragmentációs fázisátalakulást. Sikerült numerikusan meghatároznom az átalakulás kritikus exponenseit. Képlékenység fragmentációra vonatkozó hatásait is vizsgáltam doktori munkám keretei közt. Képlékeny anyagokkal végzett fragmentációs kísérletekből származó eredményeket elemezve a fragmenstömeg eloszlás exponensének a korábban tapasztaltaknál lényegesen kisebb értékét találtam, mely egy új univerzalitási osztály létére utal. Az eredményeket sikerült numerikusan is megerősítenem. Ehhez a korábban használt diszkrét elem modellt kellett megfelelően módosítanom, hogy képlékeny anyagok becsapódását tudjam szimulálni.
