The presented thesis is a literary review that focuses on three relatively rare inherited thrombophilias (Protein C, Protein S, and Antithrombin III deficiencies) and their special characteristics when affecting the neonatal population. An in-depth look is taken into the difficulties in diagnosis and management, as well as the progress that has been made in these aspects over the last few decades. Included in these advances are the determination of reference values for coagulation tests and pro- and anticoagulants, values that were obtained from studies pioneered by Maureen Andrew et al. Areas where improvements can be made are addressed in this thesis, based upon findings from multi-center systematic reviews and observational studies performed in various countries. The main conclusion that can be drawn from this literary review is that further investigation is necessary to fully understand and manage these diseases in the neonatal population.
