American Academy of Periodontology (AAP) recently introduced a new classification system, which requires both established and newly licensed dentists, as well as dental students, to study and comprehend. As medical practitioners, it is essential to maintain a willingness and drive to learn and grow since the medical field is continuously evolving and changing. Periodontal disease may develop at any given moment, and several risk factors such as poor oral hygiene, smoking, diabetes, unhealthy diet, alcohol consumption, immunological deficiencies, among others, may lead to the development of the disease. Therefore, practitioners must remain up-to-date with their education regarding all aspects of their field, including learning the new classification system to communicate more effectively with colleagues and gaining the highest level of knowledge about the clinical features, risk factors, and treatment options for diseases they may encounter. Prompt recognition, diagnosis, and treatment of infections and diseases are essential to achieve a good prognosis and enhance the patients' quality of life. Periodontal diseases are progressive infections that could severely damage the gums and other tooth-supporting structures, emphasizing the importance of early diagnosis and treatment.
