While the average woman at the beginning of the 20th century and especially in the decade of the 50’s has decided to or had to find fullfillment in the image of the perfect housewife, some females decided to search for alternative routes. They distanced themselves from the mainstream and tried to express themselves in diverse artistic ways. I have chosen to explore the works of Denise Levertov and Sylvia Plath, both of whom had their most creative years in the period mentioned above and examine the ways these poets relate to questions of artistic inspiration, spirituality and the Muse.
