Journeys to Hell or to the underworld have a long tradition in the western world. Under the Volcano by Malcolm Lowry (1947) at first sight can be read as belonging to this category. While I would not like to deny that some kind of journey takes place in the novel, I would also argue that the characters are already in Hell when the story starts. This fact makes interesting changes to the original story line of an infernal journey. In the present thesis, I shall start by examining why this place is Hell, then I will discuss how the main character gets there, why he started the journey and how it has turned out at the end. Finally, I also analyse how his journey ends considering these circumstances.hu_HU
