Superconductivity is a phenomenon observed in certain materials under extremely low temperatures, which provides very significant properties to be used in electrical systems. This thesis work scope is the overview that properties and research on best applications of it. The overview of the current situation of the power grid systems and revision of new technologies prospects the best application of superconductivity. For instance, protection in an electrical system through the implementation of superconducting fault current limiters and transmission of electricity through superconducting cables. The thesis project remains focused on protection, which is why the design of AC and DC SFCL protection will be presented.
