There were initially only a few simple methods for managing caries; eventually, these methods were replaced by air-driven handpieces. Removal of caries became more effective but the limitations of the drilling strategy persisted: discomfort for the patient, the need for anesthesia, and the possibility of damaging effects of heat and pressure on the pulp. The chemomechanical approach was introduced to dentistry as an alternative method of caries removal and is mainly indicated to overcome the inconvenience of using burs and local anesthesia, causing less discomfort to patients and preserving healthy dental structure. Basically, the procedure comprised putting a solution on the decayed dentinal tissue, letting it sit for a while to soften it, and then scraping it out with blunt hand tools. the removal of just infected carious tissue, the absence of discomfort (thus eliminating the need for local anesthesia), and the lack of possibility for damaging effects on the dental pulp from heat and pressure were all claimed benefits. The removal agents are either sodium hypochlorite(NaOCl)- or enzyme-based.
