In my essay I would like to explore the underlying implications of the behavioural patterns of the characters while bearing in mind Sigmund Freud’s theories on narcissism, and the observations and interpretations of other authors, researchers and psychoanalysts working with his basic principles. I wish to examine each member of the family; the mother Violet, the father Beverly, and finally the three daughters Barbara, Ivy and Karen, with regards to the following statements: Violet Weston as an abusive, narcissistic mother and her lack of adequate parenting skills places a huge burden on her daughters who on top of having to cope with and care for two addicts suffer from the consequences of their flawed upbringing. Barbara, Ivy and Karen Weston do not receive acceptance and support from their mother, and they do not have the opportunity to turn to the father in search of an alternate either because Beverly Weston is a passive and distant figure, possibly as self-absorbed as the mother. The negative influence of the parents define the daughters’ behaviour and serve as explanation for quite a number of issues they have to face in adulthood, such as the glaring problems surrounding their romantic lives and their reckless search for protection.
