dc.description.abstractAz értekezés az apa-fiú kapcsolatokat, az apaság, árvaság problematikáját vizsgálja négy kiválasztott déli regényben: Mark Twain Huckleberry Finn kalandjai (1885), William Faulkner Fiam, Absolon! (1936), Robert Penn Warren A király összes embere (1946) és Flannery O'Connor The Violent Bear It Away (1960) című regényében. Ezen regények a 19. és 20. század legbefolyásosabbnak tartott déli regényei, melyek mindegyikének középpontjában hatalmi játékokban egymásnak feszülő apák, pótapák és fiúk állnak. A főszereplők mind szabadulni akarnak az atyai örökségtől, ki akarnak törni a múlt és az ősök árnyékából. Marthe Robert terminológiájával élve, “Fattyú”-ként jellemezhetőek, hiszen céljuk elérése érdekében számos valódi és szimbolikus apagyilkosságra tesznek kísérletet a szöveg különböző szintjein. A dolgozat fő elméleti keretét a freudi és lacani pszichoanalízis biztosítja, mert mind a freudi, mind a lacani pszichoanalízis döntő fontosságú az apa-gyermek viszony elméletében és az apának a gyermek pszichés fejlődésében játszott szerepének vizsgálatában. A disszertáció központi érvelése és eredményei az alábbiakban foglalhatók össze: az amerikai dél regényeinek kulcskérdése, központi fantáziája az apa, aki a múlt szimbolikus megtestesüléseként jelenik meg dél regényeiben. Így az apa leküzdése ezekben a regényekben a múlt leküzdésének egyik módjává válik. A kiválasztott regények hősei igyekeznek újraértelmezni kapcsolatukat az apával/apákkal és felülírni a hagyományos déli patriarchális mintát. Véleményem szerint ezen regények főszereplői mind szándékosan árvák, akik élvezik az árvaságot és nem tűrnek semmiféle külső atyáskodást. Mi több, számos, a szöveg tematikus, strukturális, szövegi és figuratív szintjein végbemenő, apagyilkossággal biztosítják apátlan mivoltukat. Disszertációmban ezen árva hősök az atyai minta átírására, az apa legyőzésére, és az atyai hatalom alól való kiszabadulásra tett kísérleteit vizsgálom: azt, hogy milyen formát öltenek, hogy sikerre vihetők-e és hogy pontosan mit is jelent a sikerük vagy bukásuk.hu_HU
dc.description.abstractThis dissertation investigates the problematics of father-son relationships, orphanage, and patricide in four selected Southern novels: Mark Twain’s Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (1885), William Faulkner’s Absalom Absalom! (1936), Robert Penn Warren’s All the King’s Men (1946), and Flannery O’Connor’s The Violent Bear It Away (1960). These novels share the critical assumption to be among the most influential Southern novels of the 19th and 20th century. Moreover, they all have fathers, substitute fathers, and sons in their centers, engaged in a power game. The protagonists all want to become free of the paternal inheritance, break out of the shadow of the past and the ancestors. In doing so, they commit a series of patricide on the thematic, structural, textual or figurative levels of each text. The protagonists can be aptly described with Marthe Robert’s words as “Bastards” who are never done with killing their fathers in order to take their place (30). In their quests to achieve this goal, they commit numerous attempts of real and symbolic father murders. Considering the primary sources for analysis, the dissertation samples Southern novels for their obsessive concern with the question of the father/fatherhood. The main theoretical framework of the study is provided by Freudian and Lacanian psychoanalysis for its crucial importance in the theory of the paternal-filial relationship and the role of the father in psychic development. The following thesis sums up the overall argumentation and conclusions of the dissertation: The metaphor of the father is a key fantasy appearing in the Southern novel, and the father is a symbolic embodiment of the past, hence in these novels, the dissertation claims, overcoming the father is one way of overcoming/coming to terms with the past. The heroes of these novels intend to define, or rather redefine their relationships with the father/fathers. They attempt to overwrite the traditional Southern patriarchal pattern. The protagonists of these novels are all self-willed orphans, who embrace orphanage and do not tolerate any attempts of fathering coming from the outside. Moreover, they ensure their fatherless state by several father-murders, which take place on the thematic, structural, textual, and figurative levels of the narratives. The dissertation analyses these orphan heroes’ different attempts of overwriting the paternal pattern, overcoming the father and establishing their freedom from paternal authority to see what forms these attempts may take, whether they can become successful and what theirs success or failure mean and entail.hu_HU
