Pregnancy causes a number of physiological changes in a woman's body, both general and ones that affect the oral cavity specifically. The body gradually becomes more susceptible to oral infections as a result of changes in host immunity, twisted and dilated microvasculature, increased permeability of oral blood vessels, and altered estrogen and progesterone levels brought on by hormonal swings throughout pregnancy.
