Synthesis of C-(2,3,4,6-tetra-O-benzoyl-β-D- glucopyranosyl)-Formaldehyde Benzoylhydrazones, as Potential Bidentate Ligands for the Formation of Half- Sandwich Type Platinum-Group Metal Complexes

Many bioactive monosaccharide derivatives have been designed and synthesized in the Chemical Glycobiology Research Group (Department of Organic Chemistry, University of Debrecen) over the past 20-30 years,8 as it has become widely accepted in the scientific community that carbohydrates and their derivatives play a fundamental and ubiquitous role in a vast array of biological phenomena. During this work sugar containing half-sandwich platinum-group metal complexes have been also prepared and patented 9 some of which have shown (sub)micromolar cytostatic activity against carcinoma, lymphoma and sarcoma cancer cells10,11 as well as antibacterial activity against multiresistant Gram positive bacteria. 12 The aim of my thesis work was to synthesize different C-(2,3,4,6-tetra-O-benzoyl-β-D-glucopyranosyl)-formaldehyde benzoylhydrazone derivatives which can be used further for the preparation of a diverse set of new platinum-group metal complexes to extend the SAR(structure – activity relationships) studies. The synthesis of these sugars containing half-sandwich platinum metal complexes has the potential to yield new anticancer agents that arewidely used in chemotherapy.
