dc.description.abstractDuckweed is a rapidly propagating floating aquatic plant that can double in two to four days, and is both an affordable and protein-rich crop. Indoor Vertical Farming (IVF) has been adopted in recent years for the biomass production of duckweed plants. IVF of duckweed is achievable in multilevel cultivating shelves with a proper water flow system incorporated in it. Water flow is an important factor in growing duckweed indoors. Flow rates are critical to the performance of a duckweed-based system because they regulate the mixing, residence time, and nutrient supply of the medium. Sufficiently high flow rates in relation to the system volume and surface cover of duckweed are required to prevent nutrient depletion. Further important factors are the nutrient levels that, besides supporting the growth of duckweeds, can also affect algae and microbiome in the IVF. Nutrient levels, therefore, need to be regularly monitored and adjusted during cultivation according to the duckweeds’ need. Due to their small size, high yield and biomass quality, duckweed is most suitable for bioregerative life support system in space missions. Wolffia shows increased growth in altered gravity. The radiation at low concentrations increase the production of antioxidants which is beneficial in human diet in space. Using IVF for duckweed cultivation, thus we can increase the production of duckweed using artificial light system, and also boost the antioxidant content. In conclusion, IVF of duckweed is beneficial for high protein production to meet human needs on Earth as well as in space.
