This thesis examined the genetic diversity, population structure, and phylogenetic relationships of the Transylvanian Double-Crested Tumbler pigeon in comparison with other domestic pigeon breeds. Microsatellite markers and mitochondrial DNA COI sequences were used to study both nuclear genetic variation and maternal lineages. The microsatellite results showed that the breed has relatively high genetic diversity, but also evidence of a heterozygote deficit and inbreeding, likely as a result of breeding practices and the small population size. Genetic differentiation between most breeds was low overall, with the exception of the Transylvanian Double-Crested Tumbler. The mitochondrial DNA results revealed several unique haplotypes within the breed and supported its separation from many of the other studied populations. Overall, this study provides new information on an understudied Central European pigeon breed and shows the usefulness of combining nuclear and mitochondrial markers in conservation genetics.
