dc.description.abstractGastro-intestinal (GI) tract of human contains gut microbiota mostly bacteria. They live in a symbiotic relationship with the human and one of their tasks is to assist in our food digestion. According to the International Scientific Association for Probiotics and Prebiotics (ISAPP), probiotics are “live microorganism which when administrated in adequate amounts confer a health benefit on the host”.Prebiotics are defined as “a nondigestible ingredient that beneficially affect the host by selectively stimulating the growth and activity of one or a limited number of bacteria in colon and thus improves host health.Carbohydrates were isolated from four basodimycota, including Lentunula edodes (Shiitake), Pleurotus Ostreatus (Oyster), Pleurotus eryngii (King trumpet) and Lactiporus sulphureus (Sulphur shelf). Three of them were from local grocery stores and L. sulphureus was collected from the bark of a willow tree in Nyírség region, Hungary.So, from the result of this experiment I can say that extracted oligo- and polysaccharide content of supernatant-II from hot water extraction of L. edodes and supernatant-II from hot water extraction of P. ostreatus have the best prebiotics properties among the experimental mushroom species.
