dc.description.abstractThis thesis aims to synthesize and characterize flexible thin film and rigid PI aerogel monoliths using various methods. Rigid PI aerogels were synthesized first, followed by flexible PI aerogels without shrinkage. The structural construction of the aerogels was analyzed using SEM, nitrogen porosimetry, and IR spectroscopy. The mechanical properties of the aerogels were tested using compression testing at different relative humidity levels. The results suggest that flexible PI aerogels have higher values and potential utility for a wider range of applications than rigid ones.
