This thesis discusses the efficiency of penicillin production by P. rubens and how this efficiency has improved over the years. Key aspects such as genetic engineering initiated by classical strain improvement programs as well of optimisation of production conditions have aided in this journey. The discovery of penicillin marked a moment of medical history and transformed the treatment of bacterial infections, saving millions of lives.
