Semicarbazones and thiosemicarbazones are used in a variety of biological processes, such as anticancer, antioxidant, and antibacterial agents. In the Chemical Glycobiology Research Group (Department of Organic Chemistry, University of Debrecen) many bioactive monosaccharide derivatives have been designed and synthesized for many years. During this work, sugar-containing half-sandwich platinum-group metal complexes have been synthesized and patented. In this extensive body of work, we have successfully created and patented half-sandwich platinum metal complexes containing sugars. Some of these complexes have exhibited notable cytostatic effects, with (sub)micromolar activity observed against carcinoma, lymphoma, and sarcoma cancer cells. Furthermore, these complexes have displayed antibacterial properties, particularly against multidrug-resistant Gram-positive bacteria.
