This thesis examined the use of Sorbolit, a sorbent used in hazardous waste incinerators to remove harmful pollutants from flue gases through the capture of dioxins, furans, and heavy metals. Sorbolit, with a composition of 65% hydrated lime, and 35% activated carbon, is a mixture to neutralize acid gases and adsorb reactive metals. In collaboration with Ecomissio Kft. the research compared elemental composition between unused Sorbolit with spent 2022 and 2023 samples using inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP OES). As a result, for instance, it was identified that mercury levels increased from 2.13 mg/kg for the unused sample to over 100 mg/kg for the used ones, indicating the affinity of the used sorbent for this metal. Zinc and sulfur concentrations also increased significantly, with sulfur reaching 154 g/kg in 2023, reflecting the effectiveness of hydrated lime in forming stable compounds like calcium sulfate. However, metals like arsenic, cadmium, and lead were not detected, likely due to their absence in the waste stream or analytical limitations. These results confirm the reliability of the Sorbolit in removing pollutants but some slight limitations in detecting trace elements indicate directions for development of analytical evaluation for further research.
