Construction of an Istanbul Museum in Virtual Reality Environment
Absztrakt
Istanbul has always been a giant point of attraction throughout the history. Its habitable geography that provides easy access to water sources and mild climate made it an easy choice for early civilizations to settle down, not even mentioning its undeniable beauty. In the following centuries, it’s crucial location played a big role for it to become the city of desire. It holds a very important connection between two major continents, Europe and Asia, as well as holding a very important naval location with its Bosphorus being the only way to reach to and from Black Sea to open waters. Virtual Reality is still a new term for many people, however, it was easy to see for every researcher and industry pioneer the potential it possesses. Currently, Virtual reality systems are being used in almost every field as a tool of improvement. In military, it provides extremely valuable training opportunities which would otherwise not be possible. In automative industry, the simulations that has been created with Virtual Reality systems proves to be crucial to enforce our safety. In medicine, it lets surgeons to practice without fatal consequences. It is a technology that undoubtly improves us and our lives. In this thesis, I wanted to create a virtual space using 3d modelling programs and 3d graphic engines to visualize a museum, where people could get information in a visual form from their seats in our fast-paced lives. Even though the main advantages this technology brings to the table are in more important fields like education and medicine, I still believe it is very important to continue the implementation of this technology to other fields to create visualization, because the more senses that something triggers, the more “real” it is conceived by the people. An information box such as a virtual museum makes it access to more people as it is more easily accessiable. In the first chapter of this thesis, you will find information regarding Virtual Reality, its history from past to current day and the significance it holds for various industries. In the second chapter of this thesis, you will find information regarding the history of Istanbul and reasons why it has always been a very important capital for the world. And in the third chapter of this thesis, you will find the modelling process of a museum in virtual space using a 3-dimensional modelling program Autodesk 3ds Max and its integration to virtual environment using Unity Engine.
