dc.description.abstractSporobolus cryptandrus perennial C4 bunchgrass, which is native to North America, is considered an invasive species in Europe. In Hungary, widespread stands of Sporobolus cryptandrus were found at over 40 sites in the vast sandy Kiskunság and Nyrség regions between 2017 and 2020. The aim of the current was to characterize its early germination and seed bank formation. Through a full-factorial experiment, the effects of soil and litter cover on the germination of the species were analyzed. Similarly, it assessed the seed bank density and vertical distribution of the viable seeds of the species, by collecting intact 10 cm soil cores from grassland stands with different levels of invasion (0%, 1-25%, 26-50% and 50% <). The results showed around 24% of all seeds were germinated during the experiment. This means that the litter cover and soil burial had an impact on its germination. On the other hand, from the seed bank emerged 2140 individuals, of which 320 were S. cryptandrus. Sporobolus cryptandrus effectively has different levels of invasion that affect significantly the total seedling number of other species, and also the species richness, Shannon diversity and evenness of the seed bank. The results of this research allow us to get knowledge of Sporobolus cryptandrus germination behavior and seed bank formation strategy, which, finally, can help to form management suggestions on how the species can be suppressed and/or eradicated most effectively in natural grassland habitats where it appears.hu_HU
