dc.description.abstract | Abstract This comparative research was conducted to identify adoption of Circular Economy (CE) practices of six European vehicle manufacturers: Renault, VW Group, BMW, Mercedes Benz, Volvo, and Stellantis. As environmental challenges are escalating and new regulations come in place, CE offers a form of sustainability approach that reduces waste, increases resource efficiency, and decouples growth from resource depleting. The research assesses the extent, consistency and environmental impact of CE implementation across the selected companies using qualitative content analysis of publicly available data, including sustainability reports and policy documents. The key findings indicate that all firms are incorporating CE principles, such as remanufacturing, recycling, and closed loop, but they vary considerably in depth and transparency. Companies like Renault and Volvo appear to align their strategy with measurable outcomes, whereas some companies have inconsistencies in their reports or rely too heavily on recycling metrics. The report identifies key enabling factors such as regulatory frameworks of the EU and digital technologies, and barriers including initial investment costs, design limitations and reporting discrepancies. As a result of these findings, the research will help inform best practices in CE application, thus providing insight for industry players, regulators and sustainability advocates looking to improve circularity in automotive manufacturing. | |
