In this work, NAM - NIPA-based water-soluble block copolymers with varying degrees of polymerization synthesized (Mn, NAM molar fraction:) using reversible addition/fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization and characterized by MALDI – TOF – MS (mass spectrometry). The characterization of copolymers is challenging with the gel permeation chromatography (GPC) technique. For copolymers there are no standard materials thus there is a strong need to develop methods for characterization. Furthermore, the hydrodynamic radius of the copolymers can be influenced by the solvent used in separation as well as the copolymer's chemical structure. To properly define such copolymer systems, the solvent-polarity-molecular mass-composition-hydrodynamic volume connection must be established, which is not possible. My aim is to suggest an alternative method which is developed based on a GPC, where copolymers were measured with two different eluents, which is capable of identifying the molecular weight and composition. This simple GPC method is inexpensive, compare to Mass Spectroscopy and easy to automatize. For instance, in case of MALDI experience is required for the analysis, i.e. human resource is important. In general NMR has great advantage in structural analysis, however, it is expensive and relatively slow. Such method helps in the development of block copolymer-based functional materials.
