dc.description.abstractThe twin phenomena of lean management and additive manufacturing (AM) are discussed together with their societal betterment role to realize sustainability and motivate of their integration in this direction. A major goal of lean management, waste and value-driven, is the optimizations of resources and the streamlining of different layers or processes. Using additive manufacturing, a process whereby parts are created layer by layer, a technique that facilitates previously unattainable functionality with minimal material waste. Using an extensive literature review supplemented with empirical investigation, this study explores synergies between lean practices and AM, identifying how their application together can yield far-reaching sustainability benefits. Synthesis of the findings reveal that companies that have embraced both frameworks have utilized less material, consumed less energy, and been more efficient. Additionally, the study highlights challenges like quality control issues in AM processes and cultural resistance to lean implementation that need to be overcome to achieve the potential benefits. This study does not only have theoretical contributions; it paves the way for further contributions towards recommendations for practitioners which are in the industry of Sustainable manufacturing. Framed in the wider context of literature, this thesis adds to the body of knowledge on manufacturing and sustainability and provides a path for further research in this space. In conclusion, the combination of lean management and additive manufacturing proffers a powerful approach to realize operational efficiency and environmental sustainability in manufacturing.
