The human diet relies heavily on crop species. A current crisis in agriculture has been caused by climate change, making it challenging to sustain production levels. Climate change affects yield through extreme weather events, such as flooding and drought. Under such conditions, crop species can experience oxygen and nutrient deficiency, which leads to developmental and physiological problems. Aerenchyma is one of the various adaptation mechanisms that crops develop to overcome the consequences of abiotic stresses.
