    The new concept of the use of vitamin D3 in the medical practice.

    Vitamin D refers to a group of fat-soluble secosteroids responsible for increasing intestinal absorption of calcium, iron, magnesium, phosphate, and zinc. In humans, the most important compounds in this group are vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) and vitamin D2 (ergocalciferol). Cholecalciferol and ergocalciferol can be ingested from the diet and from supplements.Very small number of foods contain vitamin D; synthesis of vitamin D (specifically cholecalciferol) in the skin is the major natural source of the vitamin. The active vitamin D metabolite calcitriol mediates its biological effects by binding to the vitamin D receptor (VDR), which is principally located in the nuclei of target cells. The binding of calcitriol to the VDR allows the VDR to act as a transcription factor that modulates the gene expression of transport proteins. Vitamin D deficiency increases the risk of developing and dying from cancer, an increased risk of type 1 diabetes, multiple sclerosis, hypertension, and many other diseases. Low levels of vitamin D in pregnancy are associated with gestational diabetes, pre-eclampsia, and small infants.
