    Insulin resistance occurs when cells in the body don't respond properly to insulin and as a result, the body requires more insulin to regulate glucose levels. This resistance can lead to increased blood glucose levels and if left untreated, can progress to type 2 diabetes, as well as other conditions such as obesity, cardiovascular disease, and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, which is a condition in which there is a build-up of excess fat in the liver, not caused by heavy alcohol consumption. When the liver becomes overloaded with fat, it can lead to liver inflammation and scarring, which can progress to a more severe form of liver disease known as non-alcoholic steatohepatitis
