    Motives and determinants of Chinese Outward Foreign Direct Investment in Central Asia under the framework of Belt and Road Initiative

    The Belt and Road Initiative (BRI)is Chinese’s President Xi’s foreign and economic policy that is intended to rewrite the nowadays geopolitical landscape. The initiative aims to boost trade and increase connectivity by linking China to Central Asia and onwards to Europe. China is also encouraging FDI in the BRI countries to seek new markets, resources, and increase efficiency in the transportation and logistics sector. In BRI countries, depending on the countries and their regions, different types of foreign direct investment (FDI) take place, and each type of investment is driven by a certain motive. Central Asia is one of the strategic regions in the perspective of BRI, due to its important geographical location and abundant natural resources, this region is receiving a tremendous amount of FDI. This thesis aims to examine the motives and determinants of Chinese OFDI in Central Asia, in the perspective of BRI.
