    Human mediated-dispersal: Investigating the potential role of chest waders on zooplankton hitchhiking

    This study aimed to investigate the zooplankton communities present in the Rakamaz-Tiszanagyfalu Nagy-Morotva oxbow lake, with a focus on three different macrophyte-associated habitats, as well as the potential for zooplankton hitchhiking on chest waders. Zooplankton samples were collected in early autumn from different areas of the lake, and both filtered water samples and soft sediments were analyzed. In-situ parameters were also measured using digital multiparametric sensors. The study found that the zooplankton present in the samples were mainly divided into rotifers, microcrustaceans, and insects, with each habitat having specific associations with certain types of zooplankton. Environmental variables like depth, temperature, transparency, and dissolved oxygen were found to be relevant factors. Additionally, the study found significant densities of zooplankton hitchhikers on chest waders, although it is uncertain whether the transport of zooplankton between aquatic ecosystems is possible. The study recommends further research on the dispersal of zooplankton through other human-mediated vectors, as well as on specific developmental stages of target zooplankton.
