    Rainfall-driven soil erosion is a serious environmental and food security problem throughout the world, especially more accelerated in developing and mountainous countries like Ethiopia. It is important to tackle this serious problem to secure environmental protection and food security issues. Quantifying the soil erosion rate in a given site and mapping the severity of it is one of the preconditions in integrated watershed management and environmental planning strategies. This diploma thesis focused on quantifying the soil loss and generating a severity map of the Megech watershed that helps for effective planning and decision making to implement management interventions of watershed-based conservation measures. Using the six parameters: erosivity, erodibility, slope length and steepness, cover management, and erosion control practices as input data in the RUSLE model and ArcGIS software, the average soil loss in the Megech watershed was quantified and the erosion hotspot areas were identified and mapped.
