    Obesity is a common and preventable disease characterized by an excessive amount of body fat and associated with multiple pathophysiological mechanisms. Global prevalence of obesity has nearly tripled since 1975 and it affects over a third of the world’s population today. Obesity is not only a merely aesthetic problem but is a major risk factor for the development of a number of potentially serious health problems, including heart disease, stroke, hypertension, diabetes, and some malignancies, resulting in poor overall quality of life and increased morbidity and mortality. Currently, there are five drugs approved by FDA for the specific treatment of obesity. A number of clinical trials have shown promising long-term weight loss effect among individuals treated with anti-obesity medications along with lifestyle modifications. The purpose of this thesis is to provide an updated review of pharmacological agents that have been developed for the treatment of obesity.
