    Sustainable start-up incubation: an Indonesian case

    This doctoral dissertation investigates how university-based business incubators support sustainable start-up development in Indonesia, with a specific focus on Bali Province. The study adopts a sustainability-oriented entrepreneurial ecosystem perspective to examine incubation processes and outcomes. Its primary objective is to evaluate the effectiveness of university business incubators in fostering economically viable, socially responsible, and environmentally sustainable start-ups. A quantitative research approach is applied, combining bibliometric analysis with two large-scale survey studies. The first research phase analyzes the profiles, services, and sustainability orientation of university business incubators. The second phase examines the performance of incubated start-ups using Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM). Results confirm that a sustainable entrepreneurial ecosystem has a positive and significant effect on the sustainable entrepreneurial process. The entrepreneurial process, in turn, positively influences production and commercialization outcomes. Moreover, the sustainable entrepreneurial process mediates the relationship between the ecosystem and start-up performance. The findings provide actionable insights for universities, policymakers, and incubator managers aiming to strengthen sustainability-driven incubation models.
