    Pharmacological Treatment of Colorectal Carcinoma

    Colorectal carcinoma is showing trends of rising incidences globally, particularly in developed countries. It takes the third position as the most common cancer worldwide, which may be attributable to an increased westernisation both in diet and lifestyle in several countries and an ageing population. The presence of these factors provides an increased risk for the formation of colorectal cancer. Surgery is the mainstay of treatment for patients with colorectal carcinoma. However, it may be augmented by several other forms of treatment such as adjuvant chemotherapy, targeted therapy and in cases of rectal cancer neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy and in recent times the use of immunotherapy has come to light. Prevention of the disease is undoubtedly the goal from a public health perspective thereby necessitating the need for screening programs to detect precursor lesions and early tumours as therapeutic management with surgery and medication have limited impact on cure rate and survival. In this thesis, an overview of the epidemiology, aetiology and pathophysiology as well as the management of colorectal carcinoma with particular regards to the pharmacological management is discussed.
