Absztrakt

This thesis deals with High Speed networks and their relevance in society. It explains the its technologies, performance and applications. The emergence of new high-speed networks challenges our view of distributed networking to great extent. The increase in use of high-speed links have caused a wide range of networks and services to be developed. Of course, as the need for faster transmission grows, the design of communication systems need to be improved. The recently introduced and upcoming high-speed systems significantly reduce end-to-end delays in transmission through a minimization of the processing in the intermediate notes of a more simplified network routing of packets. The underlying fibre-optics have the potential to provide on the order of gigabits of bandwidth. With the introduction and advance of these high speed networks, it is therefore important to study the properties of these networks, such as how they deal with deadlock, how to design them to withstand faults and the best way to measure their performance and reliability. In this thesis, I attempted to explain the advances made by man in the field of high speed networking and to analyse the cost analysis of the the developments.
