The topic of my thesis is a comparison between a novel and a film: Great Expectations by Charles Dickens, and the film Great Expectations directed by Alfonso Cuaron in 1998. Some critics say that it is a very good movie, while others claims that despite its popular cast1 it was not a great success (“Great Expectations”, Wikipedia). These reviews criticise the sexuality of the film which does not beseem to the original Victorian novel. I agree those who believe that it is a great film. In my opinion the director had to adjust to the modern world in which the film takes place, so it is not surprising and strange that sexuality appears in it. As it is a loose adaptation, the source is regarded as a raw material, therefore there are some similarities and more differences between them, so it is a good topic to examine the transformation of a nineteenth century novel into a modern film. I have always liked this novel because of its themes, atmosphere and values. First I had read the book, and later I saw the film. In my opinion the novel proved to be meaningful for many generations, so it was a great idea to make a film from it, which scene is not the original Victorian England, but Florida and New York in the 1990s.
