Psychological trauma deriving from a traumatic event has always been something intangible, a kind of perplexing chaos located within the outlines of the body which is often too complex to be communicated directly. Visual art as a non-verbal form of expression provides a practical tool for conveying the unutterable pain trauma comes with and even though the experience of pain is remarkably different for each individual, it is possible to collect a series of observable technical qualities that recur in numerous trauma representational art works. Since these pieces of art are often inspired by autobiographical details, a better understanding of the ways in which the experience of living alters for the sufferers as a consequence of the harmful exposure becomes possible. By representing and confessing their innermost feelings, thoughts and secrets, these artists provide the audience with authentic narratives concerning the experience of trauma, what is more, their works can enrich viewers’ self-knowledge and, through relational viewing, identification with the human figures represented can connect members and build a community based on a shared experience. The focus of this thesis falls upon the visual representation of psychological trauma, the expressionistic techniques used by Tracey Emin for communicating her feelings, the impact her art works can have on the spectators, as well as the empathy triggered by and the power of autobiographical art and relational viewing in creating supportive communities.hu_HU
