Chlorhexidine is a powerful antibacterial drug that is especially efficient against Enterococcus faecalis, a species of bacteria linked to treatment failures. Because of its particular capacity to bind to hydroxyapatite, chlorhexidine has also been proven to have long-term antibacterial effects. A progressive release of this bound chlorhexidine could maintain an even level of the molecule in the root canal for an extended length of time, allowing for the creation of a bacteriostatic environment.
