As the title of this thesis already suggests it is going to be centered around the powerful mythological figure of Medea and the representation of her persona in three literary pieces; in Euripides’ drama Medea, in the Mexican American Cherrie Moraga’s play titled The Hungry Woman: A Mexican Medea and in the Irish Marina Carr’s By The Bog of Cats. The two latter works are both based on the first. The reason for choosing to write about these two contemporary playwrights are the following: they are both female playwrights and their plays are centered around powerful female figures challenging classical gender roles, the literary works of both are much influenced by their nations mythological heritage, both as a consequence of their nations’ political situation, underwent a certain colonial experience, had to live together with the a cultural and sociological influence of a dual nature, that of their nation’s oppressed culture and that of the governing society.
