St Martin's Hill near Győr has been crowned by a Benedictine monastery for more than a thousand years, since 996 AD. It was St Stephen's father, Géza sumpreme prince, who invited Benedictine monks onto the country to help and convert Hungarians to Christianity. The Benedictine motto 'Ora et labora' has been the manifestation of monastic spirit. The church and monastery consecrated in 1001 AD was a place of pilgrimage for later kings of the Árpád dynasty and has been a centre of high intellectualism ever since. The more tan thousand-year history of the monastery, its places of interest and treasures are presented by Benedictine teacher Szilveszter Sólymos and illustrated by just under two hundred and fifty artistic photographs by József Hapák. The book recalls famous teachers-educators of the Benedictine order as well as the most important events of the past years. Among these events the visits by Pope John Paul II, the Coptic Pope and Aleksiy, Patriarch of Moscow, have symbolised the approach of Christian churches.
