The main aim of my research was to investigate how vocabulary in a particular language – in this case English – can be best expanded. The 14 people who participated in my study are all university students and are 19-24 years old. I tried to find students who were about the same level of English so that there should be no enormous differences in the results of my tests. First, they were given a questionnaire to fill out that was related to the three methods (Memorization, Memorization with listening, and Memorization from context) in which they had to choose the one they thought was the most effective one, and to state their opinion about the chosen method. Secondly, their task was to learn 20 words connected to vocabulary acquisition and the goal was to see the differences of efficiency of these three methods. Afterwards, statistics were created based on the results. Two tests had to be done that measured their ratio of acquired words because I realized that the first test was not completely adequate. In the first case, apart from the fact that everyone thought that the Memorization from context would be the best method, the exercise with the listening part proved to be more effective. So, in the second test I was more careful and more attention was paid to the tasks that the participants were given, and the results were as expected. The conclusion I found was that much depends on the difficulty of the words, and that the different participants have different speed and success in learning the given words.hu_HU
