Immunotherapy has emerged as a groundbreaking treatment modality in the field of oncology, revolutionizing the management of various cancer types, including gastrointestinal cancers. This paper provides a comprehensive overview of the current role of immunotherapy in gastrointestinal cancer, highlighting recent advancements and ongoing research. In recent years, immunotherapy has demonstrated remarkable success in gastrointestinal malignancies, particularly in advanced and metastatic stages, where traditional treatment options often show limited efficacy. Immune checkpoint inhibitors, such as anti-PD-1 and anti-PD-L1 agents, have shown promising results in multiple clinical trials, leading to their approval for certain gastrointestinal cancers, including metastatic colorectal cancer, advanced gastric cancer, and hepatocellular carcinoma. Key challenges in gastrointestinal cancer immunotherapy include patient selection based on predictive biomarkers, management of immune-related adverse events, and overcoming tumor immune evasion mechanisms. Consequently, ongoing research focuses on combining immunotherapy with other treatment modalities, such as targeted therapies and chemotherapy, to enhance response rates and prolong survival.
